We are committed to providing high quality education and we are proud to say that Lucknow Primary School is a Professional Learning Community.

The very essence of a ‘Professional Learning Community’ is a focus on and a commitment to the learning of each student. The core mission of a PLC is to ensure not simply that students are taught but to ensure they all learn. It is based on the belief that all students can learn. It means providing quality curriculum, researching interventions for students who are not learning and seeking enrichment for students who need extending.

A Professional Learning Community is based on three Big Ideas:

  • A focus on Student Learning
  • A culture of Collaboration
  • A focus on results.

All staff working within a Professional Learning Community work within a framework of four essential questions: What do we want students to learn? How will we know they have learnt it? What will we do if they haven’t learnt it? What will we do if they already know it? The process to become a Professional Learning Community involves ongoing action research into how we can meet the learning needs of all our students ensuring they learn to their full capabilities and improve our whole school results.

What We Teach

At Lucknow Primary School all of our teaching and learning is guided by the Victorian Curriculum and our philosophy of developing confident, resilient and independent learners. Our skilled teachers provide high quality instruction and an individualised learning approach, targeting individual student needs. These needs are informed by frequent formal and informal assessment within the classroom which guides relevant teaching.

The Victorian Curriculum F-10 sets out what every student should learn during their first eleven years of schooling. The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship.

The Victorian Curriculum F-10 incorporates the Australian Curriculum and reflects Victorian priorities and standards.

How We Teach

Literacy

In reading we aim to develop a reading routine and enjoyment for reading. We work to develop student’s knowledge and ability to think within, beyond and about a text. Students are introduced to a variety of reading strategies to help them read, understand and interpret texts. Daily reading lessons include:

• Independent Reading
• Mini Lesson
• Reading Teams

An essential aspect in writing is to develop the student’s ability to see themselves as writers, have confidence in themselves and to become risk takers who are willing to have a go. Celebration of student’s success and achievements are an important aspect of developing writing skills. Along with celebrating learning growth, students will conference with teachers and talk about what their next steps in learning are to further develop their writing and achieve success.

Maths

In maths we aim to develop confident, creative and resilient learners who have a strong number sense. They understand the language of mathematics and apply this to become efficient problem solvers.

When teaching maths we ensure lessons are hands on, engaging and encourage students to problem solve and share their thinking with others.

Each day, maths lessons involve components of fluency, reasoning and problem solving through hands on activities.
